Hello—
…and welcome to the last month of the year.
While we'd all love the end of 2020 to be like flicking a light switch, going from a hellacious "on" to a neatly resolved "off", that's just not the way it works.
Though there are settled moments from time to time, there aren't strict endpoints—neat and clean, tied up in a bow. Done. Next? It's important to heed and embody this as we move into the coming year and take our practice with us.
Recently, I came across a quote that speaks to this:
"We are building the plane as we are learning how to fly it.”
Is this not the blueprint for moving through change and upheaval? We are clearing a new path and navigating it while also moving forward all at the same time. It’s another reminder that our practice is an ongoing process, not a “finished product”. "Building the Plane" (2:23) (YouTube Link) or
And while we're working away in our "hangars", it's helpful to keep in mind and take to heart two other aspects of the art of change:
By its very nature, Chaos (2:56) has no place to go but back into Order. While this can be very challenging to remember, when we dare to draw on this, chaos is a road sign that we're moving towards a more settled time in our lives. The tricky part of this is that the resolution is rarely in our expected time
frame or construct. And yet—it is indeed Order.
The other reminder that I find helpful is to see our practice as an ongoing ebb and flow of "dropping off" and "picking up". I call it "Processing Central" (2:34).
How does all this speak to you? Do you have a different sense of how your process / practice moves forward? Does it soften the more challenging times? Can you relate to chaos a bit differently knowing that it is indeed the path to order?
