Hello—
Steps forward. Steps backward. Side steps. Stutter steps…all steps in the process of change.
As we continue to navigate our way into new frameworks and social strictures / structures, looking back can be a great way to plot that uncharted course and bring previous teachings forward.
Then again, we'd have to not only learn from the past but also take different actions than we did previously. Not always our strongpoint, is it?
What if we consider the teachings from mythology instead of history? The time frame immediately creates distance and its fictional quality builds in a buffer to diffuse some of the charge that reality can have.
So let's dip into Greek mythology and see what lessons it has to offer us:
An underlying theme in Greek tragedies is that we can't control our destiny, though we stumble along in an attempt to outmaneuver this. (Think Oedipus Rex). Fast forward centuries, and our modern version is when we're so wrapped up in minutia that we're clinging to some perceived sense of control to thwart the fact that we have none. (Think Corona Virus and the havoc its
wreaked). "Running From Fate" (2:23)—(YouTube Link or Facebook Link)
And as we're coming out of the enforced pause and lurching ahead, how many times have we identified with Atlas and had that feeling of "carrying the weight of the world" on our shoulders? Yet, surprise, surprise, Atlas did not carry the world on his
shoulders—despite what sculptors would have us believe. Instead, his task was much more crucial to navigation—an essential in moving forward. "Atlas Reframed" (2:38)—(YouTube Link or Facebook Link)

In the meantime, here's to releasing "control" as we deepen our ability to navigate these unsettling times.

Thanks much.
