"What Was Before This?"
And so the end of February is upon us. We're moving into the long stretch of late winter and the early teases of spring. However, before then, there is the practice at hand...
In keeping with the more open approach to
conversations that we began last time, let's consider another way to learn about someone, be it Our Selves or another person:
"What was before this?
This is such an elegant way to be invited to open up and share. It allows for any number of options. One can share what happened in the previous few moments; last week; a month ago or even at an entirely different time in their life.
It doesn't limit the exchange to the standard issue questions that offer standard issue responses. It gives the other person free rein to pick and choose what they're ready to share. It goes far beyond a lovely surface pleasantry to the very phrase that could open deeper meanings and insights.
It also prompts great self-reflection for Our Selves: what brought us to this moment, this choice, this reaction, this response, this behavior? It also dovetails beautifully with the power of "The Backstory".
How does "What Was Before This?" (2:09) feel to you?
