"Thank You"
Since it's that time of year, let's start with two simple words:
"Thank you".
Two simple words that can go much deeper than the standard response to the word please...
I thought it would be a good time to move beyond the lip service of Thanksgiving and delve into a deeper practice of giving thanks (like the word says.)
Let's set aside the hassles: travel; getting, preparing, serving food; hosting guests, some of whom definitely overstay their welcome; then the clean up and all that that implies. And let's step away from the dining table, the TV sports marathons, and the testy conversations that can arise when we forget our "Table Manners".
These are well worn habits that can tend to have nothing to do with the actual practice of "giving thanks". So let's get back to basics and take the practice back out into the
world.
Dare to spread random seeds of kindness by thanking strangers. Thank the person who gives you a seat on the bus or steps out of your way when the two of you are navigating tight quarters; thank the person hosing down the sidewalk, who deflects the water as you pass so you
won't get wet; thank the train conductor when you arrive at your stop; the barista for that extra bit of foam; the dog walker with several dogs who gives you the right of way, and so on... You get the picture.
The key is to offer up thanks to people in passing; people you wouldn't
necessarily speak to; people who you may encounter only once in your life. Believe me, the appreciation has an impact and you may very well make someone's day with those two little words.
How well practiced are you at the art of saying "Thank You"? (2:07)
