"Same River?"
Lots of upheaval in the new year already, yes? So let's immediately come back to the practice and reset Our Selves in the present:
"No man ever steps into the same river twice—for it is not the same river and he is not the same man." (Heraclitus)
This is
such a great reminder that the only moment is now and the only constant is change.
Consider it literally. You step into a river, brook or stream. Then take your foot out. Then step back in. The water is different by the very fact that it has flowed on. Whatever was underneath your
foot has shifted—if for no other reason than your initial step has displaced rocks, silt, pebbles and so on.
Now let's consider you in this scenario. When you step back in, you are not who you were just moments ago. Your thoughts are different, your stance, the very way you ease your foot
into the water—are not exactly the same as they were in the initial movement.
It's all different—both the river and you—even if it seems the "same". It is not.
Do you see that once the moment has passed, it's no
longer the "Same River" (2:39)?
